Care Training

Exceptional training for a career in care

Hygea offers expert training to help you progress through the ranks. Start with the Basic Care Certificate, Practical and First Aid training. As you grow with us, you can achieve higher qualifications.

Knowledge and skills you require

Whether you are Care Novice or Care Veteran, having the knowledge and skills to be able to do your job effectively is crucial, we all have a duty of care to maintain and improve these skills for the health and safety of our clients.

Hygea has therefore signed up with Grey Matters Learning to provide our staff with quality “Skills for Care Centre of Excellence endorsed” (https://www.skillsforcare.org.uk/Learning-development/Find-an-endorsed-provider/provider.aspx?id=237949)  & “CPD certified” (https://cpduk.co.uk/providers/grey-matter-learning-limited) training, to prepare our staff the best way possible for the journeys ahead.

We have a comprehensive induction programme with theory and practical activities, which includes the Care Certificate; you can read more about this below.

Practical training in care

At Hygea, we focus on our practical training in all aspects, from showing employees new to care the fundamentals of equipment most likely to be used in the care setting, including bed safety, sit-to-stand hoists, walking frames, hoists and slings and much more.

We also provide training in manual handling techniques essential to safely using equipment and ensuring that the person being transferred is always kept safe. We will also cover topics such as risk assessment, identifying hazards and appropriate control measures, the legislation surrounding the moving and handling of people, communication and record keeping.

In addition, we will guide nutrition and hydration, infection control, wound care, pressure ulcer management, continence promotion and catheter care.

All our training is tailored to meet the needs of the staff and organisation.

First Aid Training

At Hygea, we know that First Aid Training is vital for our carers out in the field; we chose an external provider for the necessary training to deliver First Aid training at a high-quality level.

East Midlands Medical Services provides emergency first aid at work. Level 3 training is at our headquarters. The training course is tailored to our specific needs. It covers topics such as the first aider’s role, assessing an incident, CPR, dealing with shock and wounds, heart attacks and strokes. The courses are delivered over one day, and the trainers are highly knowledgeable and passionate about their subjects.

We have had excellent feedback from our carers who attended the training; they found it informative and engaging. The course also gave them the confidence to know what to do in emergencies.

Overall, we are delighted with the first aid training from East Midlands Medical Services and would highly recommend their services to other organisations.

Hygea are now transitioning in to our own training academy, with internal fully trained instructors, in First Aid, Medication Handling and Moving and Handling,

Training partners Paragon Skills

We partner with Paragon Skills for external professional training, including short level 2 and 3 courses and qualifications such as Leadership in Adult Care Level 3 and 4.

Hygea was awarded the Employer of the Month Award in August 2023 for supporting and encouraging training to all our employees.

What is the Care Certificate?

The Care Certificate was introduced in April 2015. It is expected that all those working as healthcare assistants and adult social care workers undertake this learning as part of their induction programme.

The Care Certificate was created as a result of the Cavendish Review, which was published in July 2013. This review was part of the response to the Francis Inquiry into the failings of care at the Mid-Staffordshire NHS Trust.

The Cavendish Review found that the training and development of healthcare assistants and adult social care workers was often not consistent or good enough. Cavendish proposed that a new ‘Certificate of Fundamental Care’ be created to improve this and that led to the ‘Care Certificate’. The Care Certificate covers the learning outcomes, competences and standards of behaviour that must be expected of support workers in the health and social care sectors. It aims to make sure that you are caring, compassionate and provide quality care in your work. The Care Certificate will take on average 12 weeks to complete, the modules within this are detailed below.
